The Circuit Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction in Michigan. It has jurisdiction over all  actions except those given by state law or federal law to another court. The Circuit Court has original jurisdiction in all civil cases involving more than $25,000 and in all criminal cases where the offense is a felony or certain serious misdemeanors.

District Court, with which citizens have contact more than any other court, has exclusive jurisdiction of all civil litigation up to $25,000 and handles garnishments, eviction proceedings, land contract and mortgage foreclosures, and other proceedings. In the criminal field, district court handles all misdemeanors where punishment does not exceed one year, including arraignment, setting and acceptance of bail, trial and sentencing, and conducts preliminary examinations in felony cases.

The Probate Court is part of the judicial branch of government and ultimately under the supervision of the Michigan Supreme Court. The Probate Court is created by the State of Michigan Constitution, Article VI, Section 15 and is the oldest court in Michigan.

The Monroe County Friend of the Court is an agent of the 38th Judicial Circuit Court.  The main function of the Friend of the Court is to enforce the court orders issued by the Circuit Court for Child Support, Custody, and Parenting Time.
